Ashford & Cranbrook
Our family has been in the roofing business since 1910, and even though a lot has changed since then, we use knowledge that's been passed down from generation to generation to deliver exceptional roofing services throughout Kent and the surrounding areas.

Way back when there was just a couple of us, but in recent years we've introduced a training scheme that has allowed us to impart knowledge to the next generation of professional roofers, including apprentices in the local area with a passion for the trade and heritage skills. At Ashford & Cranbrook, we work on all kinds of roofs, including oasts and barns, slate, cedar shingles, and even ecclesiastical, or church roofs.

Our experience of traditional roofing is second to none, which makes us well placed to work on period heritage properties and listed buildings. We are members of the Confederation of Roofing Contractors (CORC), the premier roofing trade association in the UK. Membership of the CORC is not open to every roofing company, only those companies that meet the high standards set by the CORC are afforded membership.
Services
Over the years we have worked closely with local community groups, developing close relationships and understanding of the communities and the important service local charitable community organisations provide.
The pandemic has damaged the funds available to communities, resulting in a shortage of funds for much needed roofing works.
As a result of working outside and with careful precautions with some reduction, we have worked much of these difficult times.
We understand the important role charitable community organisations play in community life and we feel it is important to do our part in helping these organisations in our own small way by offering the chance for affected organisations with a need for a roof renewal to make an application to be the chosen roof renewal undertaken by ourselves with the fantastic help of our sponsors, free of charge.
We were pleased to be shortlisted to the final in the Sustainable category at the National roofing awards 2011 for our outstanding work to St Silas Big Green Roof Project in Islington.
The size of the PV system being 362 individual panels laid flush to the newly laid natural slate covering was an extremely rewarding and complicated project with obstacles from historically important surfaces to remain, the size of the task to conservation and heritage constraints amongst many others.
To be highlighted as an outstanding project to result in shortlisting is reward enough for all our teams hard work and dedication.
Slating - Slate is the oldest natural material you can use on your project.
Formed over 500 million years ago by way of sedimentary rocks being crushed into huge veins in mountains and valleys.
These stratas being cut for many generations now all over the world, none more famous than welsh slate.
These sheets being cut into thin textured or smooth, richly coloured in natural shades.
Slate is an age old trade and one which is different to all the other crafts we have learned.
It must be performed correctly, with care to provide the end user a smooth beautiful water tight roof.
Our roofers are renowned for their expertise in the ancient art of Kent peg tiling.
For three generations our fathers have passed down the craft to their sons.
Since Albert Wills all those years ago we have been improving the skyline all over the south of England.
Kent peg tiling is a rare craft and should be carried out with respect to the natural materials and surroundings you are working with.
We are dedicated to the upkeep of our local heritage and regularly work alongside local conservation officers, planning officials and keen minded clients, to produce a sympathetic combination of modern day techniques and old age wisdom.
We are a Craft business ostensibly working with Kent Peg tiles, a small and regional size hand made clay tile used for many hundred of years.
In recent times the supply of clay peg tiles has been overwhelmed by foreign clay imports which has led to the decimation of local hand made Kent peg tile producers.
This has resulted in the normalisation of larger tiles being used to replace traditional Kent pegs in roof renewal projects.
If unabated this trend will result in the cessation of Kent Pegs in their traditional size with only larger replacements remaining which will end Kent Peg tiling as a craft on our regional properties.
