The inclusion of polymers has had a huge and positive effect on the performance capabilities of modern roofing products. It was long appreciated that a membrane's ability to retain flexibility over a wide temperature range, provided the key to performance longevity. For example, the addition of APP (actactic polypropylene), and SBS (styrene butadiene styradene) polymers to bitumen dramatically increased long term retention of physical properties and instigated a seismic change for the felt roofing industry.
Similarly, flexible polymeric based single ply membranes based on various base polymers such as PVC (poly vinyl chloride), TPO (thermoplastic olefin), and EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) have proven beyond doubt their ability to retain flexibility and consequential longevity in excess of 30 years. The same can be said for liquid waterproofing based on highly elastic polymers such as acrylics and polyurethanes, and the story is set to continue.
